Dr. John Starrett
Associate Professor at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology Dr. Starrett was my instructor for Math 430: Mathematical Modeling Case Studies and Math 530: Graduate Level Mathematical Modeling. He also advised my Mathematical Contest in Modeling team in 2012 and 2013. |
"Elizabeth Finley is a very bright and talented young woman, with a great passion for mathematical modeling. She is hard working and diligent, with a strong desire to excel at whatever she does. She is participating in the Contest in Mathematical Modeling for the second time, and has been preparing with her team mates by doing practice contests, including writing code and writing up final reports in the contest style. This kind of competitive spirit and excitement about modeling as a process is rare. I highly recommend her." |
"While I was the coach of the Socorro High School Science Olympiad team, Elizabeth approached me about helping out with the team. She had a desire to help the students succeed, and volunteered a great deal of her time to coaching them. Her ingenuity and technical expertise were greatly appreciated by the students that she coached, and her maturity and dependability were invaluable to me. She helped me supervise over twenty students on an overnight trip to the regional competition, and I knew that I could rely on her completely to manage the students and any situations that might arise. Her help that year was invaluable, and the students she coached took first place at state in their events." |
I coached Socorro High's Science Olympiad team with Mr. Kempton during the 2011-2012 academic year. |
Camilla Hutchison
Graduate Student at New Mexico State University Camilla and I have worked together on a total of 9 projects. We worked on "Modeling a Flu Epidemic at NMT", "Facial Recognition Using KL Decomposition", "Image Deconvolution using Fast Fourier Transforms", "Heat Transfer in Camilla's Apartment", and "z0mb1e: Agent-Based Zombie and Human Behavior Simulation". We also competed on the same Mathematical Contest in Modeling team in 2012 and 2013. In preparation of our 2013 MCM, we also conducted two practice research projects together. |
"There is a reason I have chosen to work with Elizabeth on as many projects as I have. Not only do we have a lot of fun working together, but no one else is as dedicated, enthusiastic, or organized. She often becomes the group leader but has no problem giving up the reigns or accepting input. Her leadership led our math modeling team to rank with less than 1% of over 5000 teams above us in an international competition. She brought our team together and led us to succeed." |
"I worked with Elizabeth on the MCM -- that's the math modeling competition, essentially four straight days of coding, analysis, and writing papers -- and not only was she incredibly bright and capable, but she made a silent point to understand the dynamic of the team. She knew our strengths and weaknesses, and she could always tell when we needed to take five or when someone needed to be heard. She was a tireless worker, but also a very understanding leader." |
Claudio Gonzales
Graduate Student at The University of Chicago Claudio was one of my teammates for the 2013 Mathematical Contest in Modeling. We also conducted a practice research project together in preparation of the contest. |
John Russell
Graduate Student at The University of Hawaii at Manoa John and I have worked on two research projects together in Mathematical Modeling Case Studies: "Facial Recognition Using KL Decomposition" and "Damped Pendulum". |
"Elizabeth Finley's organizational skills really helped with productivity, as evidenced by the grades. She also knows how to play to people's strengths, providing them with encouragement to do what they do best." |
